My name is Alicia
Chambers. I am a New Zealander who was born in the Fiji Islands.
I became a United States citizen in 2008. I have been happily married
for 15 years since my husband and I met in college. He moved to Los
Angeles eight years ago to pursue his dream to become an actor and our marriage
took on a new dimension; I stay in Denver in our home with our Border collie
and he has an apartment near the Hollywood sign! When we get together,
we both enjoy the exciting city life and snowboarding and backpacking trips
in the Rocky Mountains. I also have two grown twin stepdaughters who
live in Los Angeles.
I
currently hold passports for three world economic regions; European Countries
(Commonwealth Access), the South Pacific, and the United States.
While
backpacking around the world, I stumbled onto an unusual profession, Household
Management. A big part of my job for eighteen years was dealing with
complex personalities in a demanding environment that was full of unexpected
events, like a horse escaping his pasture, their teenager getting arrested,
or nursing someone back to health after plastic surgery! I worked with
up to fifteen employees, from nannies to farm hands. I had to exercise
leadership by example, to be able to run a tight, but harmonious environment.
A big portion of my work involved listening and finding solutions to problems
as they arose and I often acted as mediator between groups. This included
checking on staff tasks, maintaining property accounts, organizing home improvement
projects, negotiating and evaluating commitments with contractors, suppliers,
services and more.
The
best part of this work was the travel. I climbed mountains, got wet
in rivers and oceans, snowboard/skied and learned to eat strange foods.
During
this time, I got my Electronic Business Management BA degree, at Westwood
College of Technology and became the first generation in my family to have
a degree.
Yet
I still desired to work in an industry with a caregiving direction to it.
I
pondered the idea of becoming a patient advocate, where one acts as a liaison
between the insurance company and the hospitals, to negotiate health care
cost. I feel that the principles of a health care advocate are similar
to the approach and philosophies of HSA for
America.
New
Zealand is a country where they have government funded medicine so every
person gets medical attention when they need it. I have been disappointed
by the confusing aspects of the health care industry in the US, from being
denied care and costs that don’t fit our budgets, to the limitations
of care it imposes.
I
chose HSA for America for my own
health insurance and my advisor was able to find me a HSA health plan
that fit my budget and my goals. I was so empowered that I actually
owned one. It belonged to me, not the government or a business.
My HSA Health plan gave me control over how my money is dispensed to the doctors,
hospital labs and procedures. What a concept!
